Beginners Guide to Yoga with Carlye Cole

In our Beginner's Guide series you will be equipped with the basics of a yoga asana (posture) practice. This includes simple sun salutations for every day maintenance, foundational postures, and how the breath can help enhance your practice. Our intention is that once you familiarize yourself with a yoga practice you enjoy, you can bring it with you wherever you go and start exploring more classes with confidence!
Suggested Props: 2 blocks, 1 strap, 1 bolster/cushion, 1 folded blanket

1) Breath
Props needed: 1 bolster/cushion
Your breath is your body's first teacher as you move through a physical practice. Here you will learn the basics of a three part breath and how the breath is linked to the movements you make in your practice.

2) Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation)
Props needed: 2 blocks, 1 blanket
In this class you will learn Surya Namaskar A, a foundational sun salutation perfect for waking the body up first thing in the morning. Afterwards, we build upon Surya Namaskar A to a traditional sun salutation, bringing in low lunges. Class is broken down slowly so you can build a strong foundation for this flow.

3) Foundational Standing
Props needed: 2 blocks
Learn the break down of foundational standing asanas:
- Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
- Uttanasana (Intense Stretch/Standing Forward Fold)
- Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I)
- Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II)
- Utthita Parsvakonasana (Extended Side Angle Pose)
- Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
- Parsvottanasana (Intense Side Stretch/Pyramid Pose)
- Prasarita Padottanasana (Wide Legged Intense Stretch Pose)

4) Foundational Seated
Props needed: 1 bolster/cushion, 1 folded blanket, 1 strap, 1 block
Learn the break down of foundational seated asanas:
- Paschimottanasana (Intense Dorsal Stretch/Seated Forward Fold)
- Upavista Konasana (Seated Angle Pose)
- Janu Sirsasana (Head to Knee Pose)
- Marichyasana III (Marichi's Pose III)

5) Full Practice
Props needed: 1 bolster/cushion, 1 folded blanket, 1 strap, 2 blocks
Now that you've practiced some of the fundamental postures, sequenced here is a basic practice using what you've learned. This will give your spine everything it needs for a daily practice. Once you feel confident in your practice, try creating your own sequence with your favorite postures!

Why I love teaching a beginner's series: We all need to start from the beginning when trying something new, and yoga asana is no exception. I love teaching a beginner's series because we take it back to the basics and lay the foundation of breath and postures with a "fresh" mind. Even after practicing yoga asana for over a decade, my main practice is composed of fundamental postures that I'm always finding something new to explore. My intention for this series is for all practitioners to build their confidence in yoga asana at their own pace and time. Take it slow, there is no finish line for this practice. Instead, enjoy the journey and development of self in body and mind as you explore your own flow.
